DARK WEB

INTRODUCTION:

We use the Internet almost every day in our daily life, it is impossible to live without the Internet. Ever since the advent of Jio in India, everyone has been using the Internet more.  And what do we often use on the internet, facebook, instagram, twitter and to read or learn new things or to get any information related to research and these are only 3% of the internet and the remaining 97% are unknown to us now.

BACKGROUND HISTORY:

  • As the internet continued to grow in the mid-to-late 1990s  it would come to transform society on a global scale. The biggest change came the from of instant communication. As long as you had an Internet connection you could talk to anyone on earth assuming of course. They were also connected to the internet and around the millennium-shift. You had over 350 million connected people to choose from. The thing is the internet was not designed with things like anonymity and privacy in mind so everything you do and say online can and it many case, will be track record and traceable back to you. Some people are very concerned about their privacy and in the mid 1990s one such group of people was the United State Federal government.A term of computer scientists and mathematicians working for a branch of the US Navy known as the navel research laboratory, abbreviated as NRL began development of a new technology known as onion routing.onion routing would allowed for anonymous bi- directional communication where the source and destination cannot be determined by Amid point. This is the accomplished by the creating something known as an overlay network. An overlay network is simply a network that is build on top of another network, in this case the internet so intead of using the normal. Unencrypted internet also known as the surface Wab Your traffic goes trough an overlay network. Now there are many different types of overlay network but a network using onion routing Technology would be classified as a Darknet.
  • A Darknet can only accessed via specific software and/or authorization. ln case that was hard to follow, all you need to know is the that people working for us government created a system which would allow for anonymous communication over the Internet. However the people over at NRL soon realized a major limitation.
  • The network to be truly anonymous it has to be available to everyone and not just us government. So NRL was force to release their onion routing technology to the public. The technology was eventually release under an open source license and become TOR(The Onion Router). Tor stand for onion router and is software you need to download to able to access this network of onion routers, today millions of people across the globe use TOR for multitude of purposes. Everything from innocent daily browsing to criminal activities and while it is the most popular. TOR is but one among numerous Darknet together they all make up the dark web.

SURFACE WEB:

As I said First of all, the internet that we normally use in our daily life is only 3 percent of the entire internet that is easily accessible. Like google, facebook, youtube, instagram, twitter all these surface web. Out of the thousands and billions of websites on the surface web, we use only a handful of them every day.

DEEP WEB:

Which is not easily accessible for us, which requires some special browser. That is called the deep web, which is much larger than the surface web. When we use deep web we are anonymous, most of the time our privacy is maintained. Generally everyone thinks that deepweb is only illegal activity which is not completely true. But deepweb is mostly hidden because there is always a security, which maintains the privacy we are losing day by day in surface web. Anyone can trade anything here, anyone can post anything anonymously, anyone can get confidential information about anything that we have banned here. And it will be very surprising to know that we all use it sometimes, for example, when we log in through any website, it may be facebook, instagram or twitter, while logging in, our user ID, password is always hidden, and The place where these data are stored is called deep web. Not too surprised to think! But it is true. That makes them a bit difficult to hack. Most of the time there are separate websites due to security reasons, yet illegal activities are still happening on the deep web.

DARK WEB:

The dark web requires separate access such as TOR (The Onion Router). It is named onion because onion has many layers just like this router has many layers and IP address masking in each layer. Many people say that the IP address changes in the dark web, but in fact it is not, in the dark web every layer of the IP address is masking the address. As IP addresses are masking at each layer, that's why there is more illegal activity. Like selling weapons, selling drugs, even selling human organs, even here one can buy someone's identity with some money, and from here one can hire an assassin or a hitman. Here everything is done through Bitcoin because Bitcoin is untraceable, in a word. Says impossible. Usually, what we search in Google Chrome has “.com” or “.in” written at the end of the link, but when we search something on the dark web, instead of “.com” or “.in” the link at the end of the link is written “onion”. One's bank account details can be bought for money on the dark web and since these transactions are done in cryptocurrency, there is no such trace. There are a huge number of sites on the dark web that are mind boggling. Like -

1. SILK ROAD:

Silk Road is a side where all kinds of illegal things are available to buy.  If anything is known about Silk Road, Silk Road was only active for a few years and the total revenue in those years was 187 billion USD.  And more than 90 million bitcoin transactions have been on Silk Road alone. Silk road was mentioned in mainstream media. This is after only a few month after Silk Road, had been taken down ex-administrators of site launched Silk Road 2.0,however in late 2014, the FBI and the second Marketplace was taken down as well. A few hours after the Silk Road 3.0 was launched and seemingly endless spiral continues . And keep in mind that Silk road was just one website among many.

2. RED ROOM:

  • Imagine that you randomly enter a live stream, where the screen is completely black and on the side you can see that the chat is going on and everyone is very happy and hipped up, and everyone is chatting in different languages or codes. Suddenly the black screen opens and the front  A person is sitting on a chair and the room is completely red. Immediately some amount of bitcoins starts coming in that chat and some requests start coming with it. Suppose, someone sent 4000 bitcoins and sent a request with it, "cut his finger" and called it red room.
  • There is a site called Assassin or Hitman.  And it will be surprising to know that the assassins or hitmen run who were ex-military officials in the past.

CONCLUSION:

  • The dark web has its pros as well as its cons.  We don't hear about the good side because there are so many illegal things happening around us in our daily life that are related to dark web.  The reason we call the dark web bad is because whatever we do there, be it good or bad, it's very difficult to track them down.  If we want to know about some things or want to read a book which is banned in a particular country, then we can take help of dark web in that case.  Or if we want to know about the data of an experiment which has been banned from all places since the government announced it, we can take help of dark web. If you are a journalist who wants to write an article anonymously, or a spy of a country who wants to share information anonymously, then the help of the dark web can be taken.  Or to communicate with a third party about a secret business deal can also use the dark web.
  • so considering all the pros and cons, it is entirely depend on us how we accept that things
